What Creates a High Sex Drive in Women?

We all know that some women have little interest in sex - and some are wanton. Doctors acknowledge that normal sex drive can vary from wanting it several times a day to, well, having no interest in sex whatsoever.

So, why do some women have a much higher sex drive? Believe it or not, it might be connected to androgens. That is to male hormones. Huh, right?

Testosterone plays a role in female desire (and estrogen, to flip things, plays a role in male desire). Although low testosterone in men definitely affects libido, it also seems to have some effect on women. One definite correlation is that women with more testosterone spend more time masturbating - but excessive testosterone levels in women can also reduce interest in sex with a partner. Which probably says something about how complex sexual attraction is and how it's not necessarily the same thing as sexual desire. It also might be an indication that testosterone levels in women go up when they are stressed - and stress can drop interest in sex.

There are some other factors that can cause an unusually high sex drive - sometimes to the point of disrupting normal activities. The idea of the "nymphomaniac" - the woman who wants sex so much she's useless for anything else - is a bit old fashioned at this point, especially as there were times when it was used to refer to any woman who admitted to having sexual desire or masturbating. However, some medical conditions, including bipolar disorder, can send a woman's sex drive up way beyond normal. Hyperadrenalism can also cause high sexual desire - along with increase in body and facial hair. And in some cases, hormones in prepared foods can throw off the hormone balance. Persistent genital arousal disorder is another thing some women suffer from - an extreme level of arousal without the ability to orgasm - and such women are often labeled "nymphomaniacs." There isn't a great treatment, but yoga and exercise does help.

So, is there anything wrong with having a high sex drive? Nope! As long as it isn't affecting your life - in which case there's usually something you can do about it - there's nothing wrong with wanting to have sex every day or a couple of times a day. And there's nothing wrong with taking care of it yourself if that's what you need to do.
